Midwest Nice 03:09
You know why I'm not speaking up The cat would never steal my tongue Just waiting for my chance To take the floor, and make it happen This road takes you somewhere But it will not put you in charge You’ll need mas connection Start watching dancing with the stars Nod and smile, alright Why you gotta be so midwest nice Take your time, be polite But never question why Think we heard you the first time You were speaking louder than you thought Granted it was under your breath We think you might’ve overshot Where else have you running you mouth Besides behind my back I’m here to kill with kindness consider yourself under attack Nod and smile, alright Why you gotta be so midwest nice Take your time, be polite But never question why

Skeleton Key 04:05
Knock down the door Let’s find a better way They can’t keep us apart By boarding up the place. Bottle up my feelings Don’t show anyone No, no matter what Like a perfect gentleman You said the bridge Would always keep us safe But then you moved away And forgot the secret code Tomorrow you should try again But you won’t I can’t believe the words I said Glad you knew what I meant They’ll be no apology Heart was in the right place Mouth let the wrong words out, We both had our doubts Let's chop down the cherry tree You said the bridge Would always keep us safe So I knew I had to stay Too afraid to let go Tomorrow, I could try again To find out where you went Or make plans for me to leave Break the lock and set me free You are my Skeleton key Every door that I pulled shut You could open up Next time I Tell you what I need, Either tell me it’s enough Or bring it home to me [Bill laughs] You are my Skeleton key Every door that I pulled shut You could open up Next time I Tell you what I need, Either tell me it’s enough Or bring it home to me You are my Skeleton key Every door that I pulled shut You could open up Next time I Tell you what I need, Either tell me it’s enough Or bring it home to me

Please raise you hand If you understand The words I just said Or the passage you scanned Don't be a fool Just be a man The tip of my tongue Words can't leave my lungs What is the point This was supposed to be fun And besides look I'm not even done It appears my confidence Is shook empty aerosol The times when I tried to speak Did I even say anything at all I was at home On was the television Charts, and the graphs And the speculation Trying to sway My decision Tricks to deploy The signal and noise The anchors it seems They're all just acting coy But just watching this It's hard to enjoy It appears my confidence Is shook empty aerosol The times when I tried to speak Did I even say anything Worthwhile Worthwhile Worthwhile Worthwhile Worthwhile Worthwhile Taking in oxygen Worthwhile Small world we're living in Worthwhile Playing the hand I was dealt Worthwhile Wondering how I would've felt Worthwhile Had you been a jack and me a king

about

When quarantine hit last year and we were in the initial throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, I, much like many other artists felt the need to create. The hard part though, was the motivation and inspiration just wasn't there. That inability to create led to indecision which led to stress. It was not great.

Slowly, throughout the pandemic, I started writing melodies on my guitar and beats on my drum machine. It was relaxing and gave me something to do. Finally after getting some decent ideas going, I decided it was time to record. Then, serendipitously, Bandcamp announced they were going to have 'Bandcamp Fridays' throughout 2021 to help artists. I decided to release packages of songs in groups of three for February, March, and April. Well, May is here and this is the last installment. Once again, I teamed up with my writing partner Bill Chesney to breath life into these melodies. I'm happy with these songs and I hope you enjoy them. If you dig, tell a friend!

about

Steve Leaf Grand Rapids, Michigan

There is a quiet confidence to the music of Steve Leaf. He has been writing songs for fifteen years now. Some songs about love, some songs about love lost, and others about everything else to cover all the bases. Steve hails from Michigan and cut his teeth in the singer/songwriter scene of Chicago which is to say he usually tries to sneak a Wilco cover into his set. ... more
